3 keys to a successful challenge?🔑🔑🔑

It's no surprise, single handedly this is the feature that gets the most engagement in a wellness app and consistently helps the app to get new users. These are the 3 keys to running a successful challenge.

3 Keys

1.  Incentivize people with prizes

2.  Make sure EVERYONE knows about it

3.  Have the right amount of content

Below are the details on each key! If you need help understanding what a challenge is and need help picking one here is a helpful page.

#1 Incentivize people with prizes

The challenge is something you are getting people do to change their behavior for better health. Give people a reason to participate in the challenge. Below are example prizes:

  • Win cash $100

  • Win a product (this could be a product from a sponsor, i.e. yoga mat, t-shirt)

  • Win lifetime membership to the app

  • Win 1-1 session with you!

Have all or most of these prizes. Then pick out of a hat who gets the prize, from the people that did the challenge. Of course for the prize you want to make a criteria. See more on that here.

#2 Make sure EVERYONE knows about it

You have to promote the F out of this challenge. People need to hear something 25 times before they decide to change their behavior. Below are some challenge promotion tips and a sample calendar:

1. Announce the challenge via social media, email, push notification based on the below schedule

2. Submit an Event for the challenge on the app store

3. Include info in the challenge like "Who is this challenge for", "Why do this challenge", "What you can expect from this challenge", "How to start it" (Include screenshot for this last one of the challenges category).

→ Sample schedule for a September challenge

  1. By Aug 19th - Announce the challenge

  2. Aug 24, 25 - Remind that challenge is 1 week away

  3. Aug 31 - Reminder that challenge is starting tomorrow

  4. Sept 1 - Welcome to the challenge, it is live!

  5. At the end of each week in September - "How are you doing with the challenge? It is not too late to get started"

  6. End of September - "Announce the winner"

Question: You may ask, who should I promote this to? My app users or my entire reach?

EVERYONE! Running a challenge is a great way to invite people into your app and show them the value of it.

#3 Have the right amount of content

Very simple recommendation of how much content you should have for a challenge:

  • 30 (or 31) days (starting at the beginning of the month to the end)

  • Each day 15-30 minutes

  • Add it to the home page in the challenges category so it is easy to find

NOTE: If you don't have 30 classes or routines that you can use then doing a 14 day or 21 day is still better than nothing!

Benefits

OK let's get into it! These are the benefits of running an in-app challenge

  1. It will bring your users in one place

  2. Create community

  3. Creates an "event" - but it is not live

  4. It will bring in new subscribers

What you need to do

1.Come up with a Challenge (5 to 31 days).

  • This challenge should be an answer to a problem that you know your users have! This is VERY IMPORTANT!

  • Some Idea/Examples - Make it your own!

  1. 30 Day Stretch Challenge

  2. 14 Days Handstand Challenge

  3. 30 Day Beginner Yoga Challenge

  4. 14 Days of Mindfulness Challenge

  5. 7 Days of Lifting Heavy Challenge

  6. 21 Days Strength Challenge

2.Create this challenge as a course in the portal and add existing classes & routines in the challenge

3.Plan the prizes

  • This is a challenge so you have to plan some prized! Some prizes we have seen in the past:

  1. Chance to Win Lifetime access to an app - You can do this from the portal!

  2. Chance to Win Cash $$$! - Giveaway cash. This can be your own or you can partner with a brand!

  3. Chance to Win some xyz product - Partner with a branch and let them know you are running a challenge. They would be more than happy to sponsor a prize!

4.Create the challenge rules

  • To win you must make some rules and make them clear! This is what you want them to do. Here is what we recommend:

  1. Must download, and subscribe to the app

  2. Must complete the challenge and email with the screenshots!

  3. Write 2-3 sentences about what the challenge did for them!

  4. Tag coach/teacher account on Social Media and mention they are doing the challenge

  5. Bonus

  6. 1.Write a review on the app store for the app!
